Will Meta's harassment solution work.

Written

BBC reported that Meta has plans to deal with harassment on metaverse meaning Horizon Worlds. The tool they have come up with is Personal Boundary. Certainly, they don't think this tool would fix every harassment case. They also seem to have rather hesitant about this solution.

I would say this causes more harm. One of the things about virtual spaces is that there is no collision geometry around the characters. In social settings, this means no one can be corned as the player could just move past. With collision geometry, this would mean that player could be corned or even worst ganged upon. So I would expect this to blow in Meta's face.

Collision geometry does fix some things like the harasser keeping herself in our face but the mechanism to ghost this person would be better. Essentially mark a person to be a ghost to you. The person does not know she is ghosted so she wastes time coming after a person whom she cannot affect. This still is not a perfect solution. How to mark another player could involve heavy menu usage. In this time harasser already has blown one eardrum. Also, every bystander has to understand that person has been ghosted. Without indication could lead to communication problems. As such group attacks are still rather harsh to defend or keep the defence secret.

I have to say, I'm sceptical there is the perfect solution for this. My solution is not easy to use and has a black list trust issue. Meta's solution has problems like causing more harm and making having fun harder (in their blog they mention high-fiving being harder). The best way is probably to give room's creator settings to put rules in place. This still could be abused if the harasser creates the room but one can have a warning system on this.
